What this calculator does

It gives a quick room cooling load: sensible and latent load, total capacity in kW, TR and Btu/h, and the supply airflow. Enter the room size, people, design temperatures, sun-exposed walls, windows, roof, lighting, equipment, infiltration and fresh air.

How it is calculated

Walls, roof, windows Q = U × A × ΔT (plain temperature difference) Window solar gain Q = A × 250 W/m² × SHGC Fresh air (ASHRAE) Qs = 1.2 × 1005 × V̇ × ΔT, Ql = 3010 × V̇ × ΔW Supply airflow from the room sensible load at ≈ 11 K supply ΔT

People, lighting, equipment, infiltration, fan heat and the safety factors are added on top. 1 TR = 3.517 kW.

Good to know

This is a quick estimate for early design and checking. It does not correct walls and roof for sun position or time of day. For final design use a detailed method such as CLTD or RTS.

Questions

How many TR do I need per m²?

Rules of thumb vary a lot with glazing, people and fresh air, which is why this calculator works from the actual room data. See the guide Cooling load: rules of thumb vs. a proper estimate.

Does it include fresh air?

Yes. Enter the fresh-air flow, or let the calculator take it from the room data. Its sensible and latent load is added using the outdoor and indoor conditions.
