What this calculator does

From the water flow rate it picks the Schedule 40 steel pipe size for chilled or hot water and shows the velocity and friction loss. You can also choose a pipe size and check it.

How it is calculated

Water ρ = 998 kg/m³, μ = 1.002 mPa·s Pipe Schedule 40 steel, roughness ε = 0.045 mm Friction Darcy–Weisbach with the Colebrook friction factor Limits velocity ≤ 1.2 m/s for DN 50 and smaller, friction ≤ 400 Pa/m for larger pipes

The method follows ASHRAE Fundamentals pipe sizing for water.

Questions

How do I get the flow rate?

Flow = cooling load ÷ (4.186 × ΔT). Use the CHW Flow calculator, or read the guide Chilled water flow rate from cooling capacity.

How do I size the pump?

Add up the pipe, fittings and equipment losses on the index circuit with the CHW Pump Head calculator.
